Today's puzzle (answers) is by Rich Norris, aka, Mr. Saturday. Of his 185 crosswords in my database, 118 or 64% of them are Saturdays! Nobody else is close.
Solving a Saturday puzzle requires a certain flexibility of mind. 37 Down is "Saves", clearly a plural. The final square is also the last letter of 48 Across, "Recent developments", also clearly a plural. Any other day of the week, you'd put an S in that final slot but even that rule falls apart today. It turns out it's a T.
"Connecting flight" has nothing to do with air travel. It's STAIRS. "Upsetting types" have nothing to do with throwing a fit. They're DARK HORSES. "Twist things" aren't anything to do with things that twist. They have to do with drinks with a twist. "Not a very good drawing" had nothing to do with art but rather was SHORT STRAW.
All this is exactly why people love crossword puzzles.
After PhillySolver's comment, I added the animation above showing that topologically an inner tube and a coffee mug are identical. This has nothing to do with the crossword but I think it's pretty.
