I loved Patrick Berry's previous puzzle. Today's Sunday crossword with it's extraneous syll-uh-bles (answers) wasn't quite as much fun but it was a nice break from the problems I had yesterday. Pavlov's fighting force, the Salivation Army was my favorite theme answer. I got it with no crossing letters, just from the title, so I get to feel smug about that, right?
Here at The JimH Crossword Blog we're all on a first name basis and that's good because there were many first names today: Morley Safer, Paolo Uccello, Rona Barrett, Johann "the Canon" Pachelbel, Reese Witherspoon, Hans Arp, Georg "Lawman" Ohm, Rosey Grier and Ellery Queen. Presumably neither Adam nor Satan needed last names back in the garden, there being less of a need to disambiguate the few personalities present at the time. Not sure why Amy gets called a self-descriptive fruit but I'd sue if I were her.
A short post today but since my last public-domain video garnered so much email and since Fritz Lang got mentioned today, I leave you with this fine piece of German Expressionism. Here's the robot transformation scene from one of my favorite films: Metropolis.
Keep the cards and letters coming. I'm off to enjoy the rest of my weekend.
This puzzle was a bit of a naming convention, wasn't it? Somehow Rosey next to PYGMY seems wrong. Is INTE an abbreviation for Integer? I doubt it, but don't get the answer otherwise. Is Pablo (my first guess) Uccelo related to PAOLO? The key answer to me was Largo. One of my favorite films is CRASH despite its flaws and detractions, it has a meaningful message.
All in all, a clever puzzle, but unlike Jim, I struggled more with this one than Saturday because I never heard of MELMOTH.

I was not on a first-name basis with Inigo Jones. I know Fay Jones' lovely chapels in Eureka Springs and around the South. In one extremely lame moment, having the initial I, I even considered IMPEI Jones. Big D apostrophe little o little h.
Very good puzzle. And Jim, thanks for the Metropolis video.

I thought 79D "Think that might is right" was WARHEAD (seemed clever at the time) and that screwed me pretty good.
