There's nothing in this weekend's Sunday puzzle that inspired a specific blog comment so instead I'm starting a new category looking back at favorite puzzles of the past. Working on xwordinfo.com has been a nostalgic trip for me and I'm close to getting more or less complete data for the 21st Century but the puzzle I still remember most goes back to the previous ERA (to use the most frequent crossword answer in my database!) In 1996, we got to solve a very special puzzle by Jeremiah Farrell.
I'd love to explain it, but I found a link that does a much better job than I ever would so click here to read all about it.
If you're a NYT puzzle subscriber, you can download the Across Lite file using the supplied links. Please give the puzzle a try before you read ahead to learn the trick. Otherwise just read on and be amazed.
UPDATE on Dec 24: I've updated xwordinfo.com to include puzzles back to 1996 so if you're not a NYT crossword subscriber you can still click here to view the completed puzzle.
