Are you feeling jealous that I haven't done one of my "mini bios about people I don't know anything about" about you? Come on in and make yourself comfortable on the couch. The lights are low, the little fountain in the corner is oozing soothing white noise and in my soft, encouraging voice, I'm going to start a conversation about you.
My concrete data is, I admit, limited but I know one unassailable fact; you're reading this blog. From that I infer that you love words. Yes, I'm brilliant, everyone says so. What else do you love? Here is your list. Prepare to be amazed. These are a few of your favorite things:
Movie: Memento. It's a puzzle and you can't resist puzzles. Close runner up is Roxanne which is all about the power of words.
Movie star: Groucho Marx. Who else has used words so well on screen?
Book: I nearly said Ulysses which is all about words and besides it's naughty (it must be since it was banned for so long, right?) but the words are not precise and you need precision. Instead it's Catch 22 which conveys its insanity of war message through careful, precise, beguiling language.
Cookie: 4 letters, starts and ends with the same vowel, Nabisco makes it...
Classical composer: J. S. Bach. Counterpoint is the process of fitting notes together into the gridlines of musical staffs so that everything makes sense both Across (melodies) and Down (harmonies.) Writing a fugue is similar to constructing a crossword.
Opera: Turandot by Puccini. The plot involves solving three word puzzles. Success means marrying the princess. Failure means decapitation. Ready? Go!
Classical performer: Victor Borge. Yes, the Inflationary Language guy.
Broadway composer: Stephen Sondheim. Clever lyrics (and music) raised to high art.
TV show: Buffy (early seasons only) or Robot Chicken
TV talk show host: Current - Jon Stewart, past - Dick Cavett
Cartoon show: Current - South Park, past - Bugs Bunny
How did I do? I know, uncanny, isn't it? For the rest of the day you'll be looking over your shoulder wondering if I'm spying on you.
