I get such a kick out of crosswords. Today's Tuesday puzzle by Ken Bessette (answers) made me giggle a couple of times. I fell into what must have been an intentional trap. 12 Down is "Former Disney chief Michael" and that's Tuesday-easy. It's gotta be Eisner, only Eisner doesn't fit. Am I spelling it wrong? No, I don't think so. Aha! It must be a rebus! There hasn't been a Tuesday rebus since June 27, 2006, but it's not unheard of. Do the SN letters cram together in some sort of opposite directions theme? Maybe ER is crunched. It didn't even occur to me that there might be more than one ex-Michael until I saw 47 Across with the identical clue. I immediately recalled Mr. Ovitz and felt like a total magoo. In a good way, though.
The other one I especially admired was 8 Down clued as "16 or Seventeen." I can just imagine the NYT puzzle czars sitting around the long oak table in the Crossword Torture Room puffing on their stogies and saying, "that'll screw with their pathetic little brains, har, har, har." I had to get most of the letters before the answer came to me.
